The USS Des Moines is the first of its class of heavy cruisers. It was laid down in 1945 and commissioned in 1948. Equipped with the world’s first automatic loading device that uses cased charges for a main gun with a firing rate of 10 shots per minute, this ship engaged in various missions, with Newport as its home port. Since 1950, she has participated in various training missions along the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Coast, in the Mediterranean and North Atlantic. She served until 1961.
